The beads eventually will change color from blue to pink when moisture is present in the air, signaling that it is time to recharge the beads (shown by an indicator card resting on the bottom of the container). Unfortunately, cobalt chloride is classified as a carcinogen by the IARC, and it is both toxic and corrosive when exposed to water. Therefore, you should not tamper with or expose the beads to water.
Ideally, you should look for desiccants which use only non-toxic compounds for its indicators. I understand that other manufacturers now use an orange compound which is far safer than cobalt (II) chloride. I believe this warrants your attention before considering purchase.

1. Works slowly when used within about 5 cubic ft. of the rated ceiling range of the product. Better to purchase a larger size, especially given the cost differential.
2. The silica gel beads contain Cobalt (II) Chloride, a class 2B carcinogen.
3. Recharging process is time/energy intensive-3 hours in a 240 degree F oven.
4. If the box, beads and/or bag are compromised in any way, the product can lose effectiveness and can become a legitimate health and safety hazard.
